Chad is a country in north-central Africa with little political stability and widespread poverty. Violent crime rates are high, there is little tourism and the U.S. Department of State warns against travel to much of the country. Nonetheless, there are some famous areas of interest and outstanding natural beauty in Chad. Intrepid travelers might find it a challenging but rewarding experience.
N'Djamena
N'Djamena is Chad's capital city. Its Central Mosque is a landmark that can be seen across the city and is the social and religious center for the local population. Elsewhere, Avenue Charles de Gaulle is a prime location for people watching and houses some of the city's colonial architecture. For shopping, the Grand Market, just south of the Central Mosque offers goods including carpets, fruit, art and clothing in one of the city's oldest districts. It is one of the best places to sample Chadian culture and interact with locals.
Tibesti Mountains
The Tibesti Mountains offer a landscape of canyons, rock faces and forests. Located in northwestern Chad, the mountains are 300 miles long and 175 miles wide with the volcanic summit of Emi Koussi reaching 11,204 feet above sea level. Travel to this remote range, which extends into Niger and Libya, can be dangerous, particularly as travel outside of the capital is at risk of carjacking and tribes living in mountain villages can be hostile to outsiders.
Lake Chad
Lake Chad is located on Chad's western borders with Niger and Nigeria. It was one of the world's largest lakes until 35 years ago, but climate change and use of its water for farm irrigation have reduced it to a fraction of its former size. The lake is still a beautiful spot and remains in use for fishing and boating. There are fears that it will disappear altogether in time and the fishermen that rely on the lake are reliant on overseas aid to fund projects to save the lake.
Zakouma National Park
Zakouma National Park is Chad's prime location for safari. Wild animals including elephants, antelope, wildebeests and lions are found in the park, which is situated 500 miles southeast of N'Djamena. Poaching was a major problem in the park during Chad's civil war, but it recently has been restocked in an attempt to capture part of the tourist market. Reaching the park is difficult and the best way to arrange a trip is through one of the travel agencies based in N'Djamena
